Ambrose McLaren Obituary

Ambrose Joseph McLaren was born March 31, 1940, in Kingston, Jamaica to Alma McPherson and Milton McLaren.  He was the eldest of ten children for his father and five children for his mother.  At an early age, Ambrose embraced his role as big brother to Livingston, Joseph, Edgar and sister Beatrice in doing whatever was necessary, from braiding his sister’s hair to collecting, transporting, and manning his mother’s fish cart alongside tending to the many dogs and random farm animals that sustained the family. He was an avid soccer and cricket player and loved music(ska, reggae, calypso, R&B, gospel, disco).

Ambrose attended St. Anne’s Catholic school.  After leaving school, he briefly worked as an auto-mechanic. It was during this time that he met Mavis Belle and together they set out to build a life together. Between them they had four children.  In 1961 he went to work for the BATA Shoe Company and five years later he was promoted to a supervisory position yet he was always looking and planning for what lies ahead. Ambrose set his sights on pursuing opportunities beyond the shorelines of Jamaica.  He managed to garner the support of his BATA supervisor who willingly assisted him in his effort to emigrate to the United States. In 1970 Ambrose landed in New York City but subsequently relocated to Cambridge, Massachusetts where he once again was promoted into management at Massachusetts General Hospital; a position he held for 30+ years until his retirement in 2004.

Over the course of his life, Ambrose remained true to his values.  He was a man of resounding character who often marched to the beat of his own drum. He will be remembered as one who led not by a multitude of words but by his actions and his innate ability to see and connect with people wherever he went.  He formed friendships that lasted his lifetime and loved his large extended family to a fault. Giving of himself freely was intrinsic to his nature. In his later years, Ambrose forged a relationship with Christ, a testament to the simple truth of God’s redeeming grace, no matter age or stage in life.

Ambrose was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Edgar, and sisters Juleen and Beverly.  He is survived by his wife Mavis, daughters Sandra (Leonard), and Andrea; sons Marlon and Roderick (Kenyia); grandchildren, Kevin, Jermaine, Kerisha, Torrey, Tristan, Tiah; Sisters Beatrice, Sybil, Audrey, Jennifer, Annie, Hope; Brothers Livingston, Joseph, Lloyd. A host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends held an incredibly special place in his heart.   Rest in Peace.
Arrangements for his service are being provided by Lakeside Funeral Home & Cremation Care.
