Obituary

David George Hewitt was born on Friday, the 16th of September 1938, to Charles and Nina Hewitt in Kingston, Jamaica. He was the 5th of seven children and the 3rd of 4 boys.

David, as was customary among the Hewitt boys, had a nickname, “Sam” commonly used by family and friends.

David (Sam) completed his early childhood education at Alpha and continued at St. George’s College where he was trained as an  electrical technician.  Afterward,  David attended The College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST), later renamed The University of Technology (UTECH), where he pursued a degree in finance and accounting. His degree in finance landed him a job with Rapid Sheffield in the Accounts department.

Being a true Hewitt, David had a love for sports and music. His sport of choice was cricket. David was a right arm spinner and represented Lucas Cricket Club in Junior Cup Cricket competition as well as Rapid Sheffield in Business House cricket.

David's love for music is well known as he owned an extensive collection of albums which covered various genres. His nephew, Richard knows about his love for jazz. Another nephew, Jerry, remembers clearly in the early 60s when he told his Uncle David that the next big reggae group would be the Heptones to which David responded that Bob Marley and the Wailers would be the biggest Jamaican group ever. Guess who history proved was right? David’s love for music was not just a hobby, he was a DJ on V-Rocket, famous among people that kept house parties in Jamaica during the 1960s.

Two significant events happened in David’s life in 1968. His migration to the United States and the birth of his beloved daughter Althea.

David made Brooklyn, NY his new domicile while he worked with United Press International (UPI) in the heart of New York City.  He held the position of Accountant before being promoted to the Budget Control Manager, and then eventually the Comptroller where he reported solely to the CEO of the company. A take-over of UPI caused David to relocate to the company’s new corporate offices in Maryland in 1984 where he resided for a number of years. After leaving UPI, David, became a real estate agent which allowed him more personal autonomy and scheduling flexibility.

After approximately 25 years in Maryland, David moved closer to family in Hartford Connecticut.  When a major snow storm hit the northeast and David had to shovel his car out twice in one day, he decided that he needed to go someplace warmer. He booked a trip to West Palm Beach to visit a old friend for a weekend and before he went back to Connecticut, he had bought a home in Florida. In less than one month,  David moved into the new home never to experience snow again.

Since David took classes in upholstery as well as furniture refinishing, these were hobbies that kept him occupied.

David or Sam, whichever name you choose to call him, was as prudent a person as you could find. He paid attention to details as any well-trained and experienced finance person would. His music collection was kept with meticulous care as each album was arranged not only by genre, but also artiste.

To speak about David and not mention a certain drink and that drink’s companion, (no explanation necessary if you know the man), is not mentioning anything about him at all. He loved a good fish meal, as a matter of fact he just loved eating fish. He also loved his hominy corn and red peas soup. He was a good cook who knew his way around the kitchen.

Bernice, his younger sister and sole surviving sibling, always had a special place in David's heart and they spoke often throughout the years.

David shared a special bond with his daughter, Althea. They became closer over the years as she was not only daughter but also his friend, and confidant.

David lived a full and disciplined life, where things were done meticulously and in due time.

Daddy, Sam, Uncle Sam, David, you were an inspiration to your family, friends, colleagues, and those you encountered. You have completed your course in this thing called life and for that, we thank you. We love you and we now wish you the rest that you do deserve.
