Obituary

Edward Vincent Grant died peacefully August 7, 2024, at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, FL, after a full well-lived life of nearly 95 years.  Edward was born in 1929 to Mary and Edward Grant in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Central Catholic High in Pittsburgh where he mostly excelled at mischief and graduated from Duquesne University in 1961.  Edward married the one and only love of his life, Edith Conroy, in 1954 and they had six children: Edward (Joanne), Greece, NY; Thomas (Jacqueline), Skaneateles, NY; Kathleen (Philip) Gordon, Clay, NY; Ellen (William) Rood, Naples, FL; Jean Cash, Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and Darlene (James) Cash, Endicott, NY. Edward and Edith also greatly enjoyed 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Edward is predeceased by his wife, parents, and only sibling Loretta (Lawrence) Lentz. Edward was stationed in Orleans, France, for the U.S. Army between 1954 and 1956. Upon his return to the United States, he continued a career at Yellow Cab of Pittsburgh while also enrolled as a full-time student at Duquesne University under the GI Bill. After graduating from Duquesne, he accepted an Auditor position for the New York State Comptroller’s Office. He moved in advance of the family to Buffalo, NY, to determine if he “liked the new job." Apparently, he liked it, and the family settled into their new home in Depew, NY, just outside of Buffalo in 1962. In 1966, a promotion moved the family to Liverpool, NY, a suburb of Syracuse. From that base, Edward travelled frequently throughout Central New York performing audits of local governments until his retirement and getaway south to Jupiter, FL, with Edith in 1991.

In addition to his large family, Edward loved big-band and jazz music including Dixieland Jazz, which made New Orleans, LA, one of his favorite cities to visit. He was also captivated by Paris, which he visited while stationed in France and later with Edith — “the red wine tastes better there!” He was an early adopter of home computers and taught himself programming on a Commodore 64. Edward was a master of shuffleboard and blowing smoke rings from his beloved cigars, earning him the nickname (and previous CB-radio handle) “Smoke Ring." Contributing to Edward’s longevity was a resolute spirit that could not be contained, earning him yet another nickname later in life – Fast Eddie!

A memorial service is being planned. Donations can be made to Stand Down, FHLC, Inc. (https://standown.org).
