“Beloved husband, loving father, and dear friend to all”
Dr. Frederick George Hess, Jr. (75) was born on July 22,1950 and raised in Cherry Hill, NJ. He passed away peacefully in his sleep, in Wellington, Florida on May 19, 2026, after enduring Alzheimer’s for four years and Parkinson’s dementia in his final months.
Fred graduated from Townson High, MD in 1968 where he was a member of the chess club and math club. He obtained his bachelors degree in Zoology from the University of Maryland, at College Park where he made life long friends that continued through adulthood. He continued with his education and obtained his PH.D. from the Department of Pathology in 1979 from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Fred had a successful career in toxicologic pathology supporting cancer research. He first worked at the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer in Omaha, NE, then at American Cyanamid in Princeton, NJ, and later, at BASF, in Durham, NC. Fred retired in 2015.
Fred met Nancy in the Spring of 1969. They married February 28, 1982 and moved to Mercerville, NJ. They have two daughters who meant the world to their father, and the girls cherished him dearly. As a family, faith was often present and Fred served as a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Hamilton Square. In 1993, they moved to Lawrenceville, NJ where they lived for almost 10 years. In 2002, Fred and Nancy moved to Chapel Hill, NC where they lived for 23 years until moving to Wellington, Florida.
One of their greatest joys was owning a beach condo in Litchfield, SC where they spent many precious days and moments with their children, grandchildren, and friends enjoying the sun, sand, and water. Fred was an avid pickleball player later in life, after enjoying tennis and golf in his earlier years. He enjoyed walking, biking, and soaking up the sun.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick George Hess, Sr. and mother, Mildred Behnke Hess. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Manner; daughters, Amy Neufeld (husband, Joshua Neufeld), Samantha Whitaker (husband, Tom Whitaker), and his four grandsons, Wyatt, Eli, Ayden, and Finley. Fred is also survived by his dear sister, Roseanne Hearn.
