Sandra Plant Gilmor
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
September 5, 1942 –July 22, 2025
Sandra Plant Gilmor, a lifelong educator, adventurer, and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of curiosity, compassion, and joy. Born the youngest of six in Vancouver, British Columbia, Sandra grew up in a lively household where her older brothers jokingly threatened to send her down the laundry chute. She graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1964 with a BA in English, a degree that would shape her lifelong love of language and learning.
Sandra spent her early summers working in Lake Louise, surrounded by mountains and working as the elevator operator at Hotel Lake Louise. Her desire to explore led her from Vancouver to Montreal, where she worked with the Head of Adult Education at the YMCA. But her true journey began when she boarded the USS Constitution and sailed to Europe.
There, she hitchhiked across the continent with a spirited group of fellow travelers from Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. The highlight of that adventure came in a boot shop in Lech, Austria, where she met a young American who would become her husband of 57 years. That chance encounter sparked a love story that would span 57 years of marriage, partnership, and shared purpose.
Together, Sandra and Gavin embraced a life of adventure. They traveled the world—exploring the wilds of Alaska, cruising the Danube, wandering through Europe, and experiencing the vibrant landscapes of South Africa. They often shared their adventures with close friends on bike trips that combined scenic routes with laughter and camaraderie. Whether pedaling through vineyards or navigating winding mountain roads, Sandra brought joy and energy to every mile.
Sandra dedicated her career to education, teaching English and History at Green Vale School in Long Island while earning her master’s in Education at CW Post. She later served as Head of the Middle School and Interim Head at Chapin School in New York City, and ultimately as Head of School at Buffalo Seminary in Buffalo, NY. Her students adored her, and many remained in touch long after graduation—a testament to the impact she had on their lives.
Beyond the classroom, Sandra was an avid golfer, a sharp bridge player, and a gracious hostess. Sandra had a gift for lighting up any room she entered, whether it was a classroom, a cocktail party, or a family gathering.
Sandra is survived by her daughters, Hetherington Danforth (Brian) and Ashley Myles (George); her grandchildren, Porter Danforth, Zander Danforth, Eleanor Myles, and Caroline Myles; and a cherished circle of nieces and nephews who will carry forward her stories, her laughter, and her love.
She lived with purpose, taught with passion, and loved with her whole heart. She leaves behind a legacy of laughter, learning, and love. She will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered.
