It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of a pioneer in Special Education and Sport; a distinguished daughter of Jamaica and the Caribbean. Our beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in West Palm Beach FL, on January 10, 2021, after a long and hard-fought battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born in Clarendon, Jamaica on December 8, 1939, the 7th of 8 children for Zachariah and Keturah Latty. After an early education in Clarendon, she moved on to pursue higher education in teaching at the Mico College, where she distinguished herself as a promising teacher and a burgeoning cricket talent. Later on, she earned a full scholarship to the prestigious women’s only Bedford College, Bedford England to study physical education.

Vivalyn received numerous accolades during notable parallel careers as a lecturer in physical education (G.C. Foster College), Practice Teaching Examiner, (Ministry of Education), and Special Needs Educator (Salvation Army School for the Blind). While doing all this, she somehow managed to further distinguish herself as a sportswoman, umpire and coach. Her cricketing exploits are well known, as an active player for 50 years; she held numerous Jamaican and West Indian records, and represented Jamaica and the West Indies internationally for over 30 years. She also had the distinction of being the first West Indies qualified female cricket umpire in Jamaica, the first female executive in the Jamaica Umpires Association and the West Indies Umpires Association. In the sport of Netball, she earned acclaim as coach by leading The RJR group team and The Jamaica Broilers to several Business House netball titles in the 1980’s. Vivalyn had a long run in the executive of the Jamaica Women’s Cricket Association including several years as President of the association.

Vivalyn never stopping innovating or upping the ante, she was always looking for the next previously unfathomable hurdle to cross or barrier to break. In the 1960s – 70’s she introduced women’s cricket to the mainstream, in the 1980’s she earned her teaching stripes, with stints at multiple schools simultaneously; St. Hugh’s Prep, Wolmers Girls, G.C. Foster College, The Priory schools.

In the 1990’s she turned her sights to helping craft the future of cricket in Jamaica and the Caribbean, by serving on the boards of the Jamaica Women’s Cricket Association, The Caribbean Women’s Cricket Association, The Jamaica Umpires Association and the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association. In this period, she again introduced women’s cricket to a new generation by founding and coaching a women’s cricket team at The University of the West Indies, were she was also on staff. In each of these administrations she was a tireless advocate for the advancement and integrity of the sport.

In the 2000’s she broke into more uncharted territory by entering the realm of live in-game cricket commentary for RJR radio station commentating on Jamaica and West Indies men’s one day and test cricket, and then also as live on-air cricket analyst om TVJ.

In the 2010’s two of her great passions collided and she was instrumental in founding The Jamaica Visually Impaired Cricket Association and the West Indies Visually Impaired Cricket Association. In these organizations she countless hours writing, debating and collaborating to lay strong foundations on which these organizations could flourish. Her achievements in this space included the successful facilitation of the inaugural visually impaired Caribbean tournament, which saw several Caribbean islands fielding teams. This multiday event was hosted in Jamaica and set the stage for the selection of a West Indies team. Vivalyn later was named coach of this West Indies team and travelled with the team to Mumbai India to compete in The Blind World Cup in 2012.

Vivalyn made more than her fair share of contributions to her chosen career and passions during her lifetime, but it was the way she made these contributions, that was even more impressive than the contributions themselves. Vivalyn’s discipline, integrity and commitment to excellence shone through in everything she did. She always volunteered to do the heavy lifting and held herself to higher standards that she held others. She started working before, and continued working long after others had come and gone. She was a leader who led by example and it that example that we will continue to look to, to light our way.
