In Loving Memory of William “Gavin” Gilmor
Gavin passed away peacefully on May 22nd, surrounded by his loving daughters. Gavin’s innate ability to excel in all things sports was a remarkable gift, one that led to friendships, competition, and accomplishments throughout his life.
Raised in Oyster Bay, New York, Gavin’s early years were shaped by a deep appreciation for community and competition. He attended the Green Vale School before continuing on to St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Massachusetts, where he captained the undefeated 1959 baseball team—a feat that earned the team a place in the St. Mark’s Athletic Hall of Fame and remains a cherished legacy.
Gavin’s athletic journey continued at Harvard University, where he proudly led the Crimson baseball team as captain and was a member of the Owl Club. His leadership and sportsmanship left a lasting impression on teammates and classmates alike. Following his graduation, Gavin served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, embodying the same discipline and commitment that defined his athletic career. He later earned his MBA from Columbia Business School and embarked on a career in finance.
Gavin’s love for the thrill of the game never faded—whether it was professional sports or middle school scrimmages, he was all in. A devoted fan of the New York Yankees and Rangers, he could often be found watching baseball or hockey, passionately yelling at the TV. But some of his greatest enjoyment came from the stands, cheering on his daughters and grandchildren. Whether coaching from the sidelines or simply showing up with his signature enthusiasm, Gavin brought heart and energy to every field he touched.
Gavin’s greatest joy in life was his family. He met the love of his life, Sandra (Plant) Gilmor, while skiing in Lech, Austria—a chance encounter that led to 57 years of marriage. Together, they shared a passion for traveling the world.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; his sisters, Elizabeth Wills and Elizabeth Meyer; his daughters, Hether Danforth and her husband Brian, and Ashley Myles and her husband George; as well as his grandchildren, Porter and Zander Danforth, and Ellie and Caroline Myles. Gavin’s vibrant and competitive spirit lives on in his children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Mark’s School in Southborough, MA, in honor of Gavin’s enduring connection to the school that helped shape his journey.
